When we select a young crew to make this voyage, their first task will be to prepare their boat. “Betty” is well set up for the challenge and in excellent condition, yet any vessel setting out on a 25,000 mile adventure, needs thorough preparation. While Jess and I will be closely involved, the crew will be looking for even more advice to help completing the task! How would you like to become part of this experience as a volunteer? Are you an engineer? or tradesperson giving advice? or just a cool dude wanting to come down, meet the team and help polish the topsides? They would all be happy to see you.
They provide lunch, drinks, groovy music, laughs and you get the warm fuzzy feeling!! The support of a few good people will be a big help. We simply do not have the budget to pay specialists to do all the labour, so the crew are doing the lot and will be happy to see you.
The scope of work will include the following major items..
ENGINE…Removal of the 2 cylinder Bukh 24hp engine, Clean and paint out engine bay, fit new engine mounts, new water pump, new fuel lift pump, new alternator, new starter motor, sump gasket, New hoses, air cleaner, belts, filters, Paint the engine/gearbox, reinstall….(we would love to find a retired engineer?? to oversee this, or even work with the crew in your garage at home?)
ELECTRICLE… Check solar panels and wind generator, Install four new AGM Batteries, Check all wiring and lights, fit some LED lights, Fit new chart plotter, Build Stainless mount and ‘maybe” fit new radar on Targa?, check/service Auto Pilot , wind, depth, log instruments. Fit new Volt/Amp meter. Fit engine hour meter. Check all HF and VHF connections and performance. Disassemble Anchor winch and check/ service all electrical connections, solenoid etc.
STEERING...Disassemble, wheel/Pedestal, rudder shaft connections, check Keyway/shaft, bearings, service everything and reassemble. Remove Hydrovane windvane, disassemble, fit all new bearings , service and refit.
MAST AND RIGGING…Remove furling gears, check and Replace standing rigging and fit new backstay chain plates, service all equipment and running rigging.
The boat will be based at the RPAYC in Pittwater. If you are up for it, please email Don or head down to the boat around the end of February. Thanks!!
